At Chelsea Heights Primary School, Indonesian is taught from Foundation to Level 6 as part of our commitment to developing confident, curious and globally connected learners. Australia shares a close geographical relationship with Indonesia, and learning Indonesian provides students with valuable skills and understandings that support future learning, travel and engagement with our nearest neighbour.
The Indonesian program focuses on developing students’ ability to communicate in the language while building intercultural understanding. Students learn to listen, speak, read and write in Indonesian through age-appropriate and engaging learning experiences that become more complex across year levels.
Language learning is embedded within a rich exploration of Indonesian culture, including traditions, celebrations, daily life, geography, art, music and food. Students are encouraged to make connections between Indonesian culture and their own lives, supporting the development of personal identity and an appreciation of Australia’s diverse and multicultural society.
Students also develop skills in intercultural capability, reflecting on cultural similarities and differences, showing respect for diversity, and understanding how language and culture are interconnected. These skills help students become informed, empathetic and active global citizens.
Through learning Indonesian, students at Chelsea Heights Primary School build strong foundations in language while developing the knowledge, skills and dispositions needed to thrive in an increasingly interconnected world.
As we begin this journey with our students, there will be a selection of vocabulary slides and review materials available for anyone wishing to practise the language at home. All vocabulary featured in these resources will be introduced and explored during class time, and students are welcome to use them for extra consolidation, confidence and enjoyment.
